Social Media & Advertisement

In a paper written by Professor Lester, social media is defined as “a communication that is devoted to or characterized by interaction between participants or consumers of the medium.” She also states it is “characterized by participation, openness, conversation, community and connectedness.” Social media is changing advertising in the same way it changed when television became a more expectable medium, except the Internet is changing social media in a much larger format.

Marketing has always been based on the 4 P’s (Product, price, place and promotion) and now people.  John Janitsch has brought a further point to drop the 4 P’s and make it the “4 C’s for the social age: Content, Content, Connection and Community.” This process will involve much higher interaction between the advertisers and the consumers. Social media makes that easier than ever before, turning advertising into micro-advertising which essentially gives you one on one experience with the advertisers.

The one on one experience has been coined the “Me the People” movement. In an article written by Mashable brings up a quote by the CEO of Proctor & Gamble who says that,
“What I would like to have is a one-on-one relationship with seven billion people in the world and be able to customize offerings for those seven billion people in the world and be able to customize offerings for those seven billion people. Digital allows that relationship.”

So, have you experiences any type of one-on-one advertising personally? And if so what was it like?
Do you all have any ideas as to how they are going to make that transition happen in a smooth manner?

I'm excited for the change to happen. I have already seen multiple advertisements become more interactive but how will it become a perfect one-on-one (or seven billion) experience?
